When has there ever been a better accountability system in your life than high school!!!??? If you miss more than a certain number of days OR if you get below a certain score, you have to repeat the whole freakin year or take summer classes! How's that for motivation? Does that light a fire under you?

Every single day, periods are set for you to show up at. You get breaks and bells remind you when the period starts and ends. If you start to do really poorly, your parents are notified. If you have a strong peer group you like, you'll have an extra level of accountability and fun.

The only problem is that you're taking required classes that are often irrelevant to achieving your goals, the teachers aren't always the best, and you don't have a choice in the matter. You have to participate.

Now, picture this!! What would it look like if you had the same level of accountability, but for your most important goals!!?? What if you got to pursue these goals with some of the country's most ambitious students? Imagine if you got to choose periods like Get In Shape, Read Books I Love, Build My Closest Relationships, Work on What's Most Important at Work, Plan for Tomorrow, etc. How much of a difference would that make in your life over next year, the next five years, the rest of your life? Building these crucial habits could literally be the difference between death and life or success and failure.

We've taken the first steps to creating this level of accountability with our Getting Stuff Done program. We've been testing it throughout the summer, and it has achieved amazing results. I hope you like it.

I just finished reading Ben Casnocha's book, My Start Up Life: What a (Very) Young CEO Learned on His Journey Through Silicon Valley, and it was definitely a page-turner that I would recommend reading for enjoyment and for learning.

Now, I know what people mean when they tell me that I make them feel like an under-achiever. What takes many entrepreneurs decades to learn, Ben learned extremely quickly and at a young age:

The power of sales

The importance of networking

How to build an active advisory board

How to outsourcing to India

The importance of bootstrapping and frugality

etc.
These are all lessons Ben learned by the age of 16, an age where the farthest most students have thought ahead is to brainstorming what colleges and universities they might attend.

The reader is left to question, "How is possible that somebody so young could accomplish so much?" Is it, because Ben went to an extremely good high school? Is it because Ben has a very supportive family who helped him emotionally, intellectually, and financially? Is it because Ben lives in Silicon Valley, perhaps the international capital for start up companies? While these are all true, it would a huge mistake to stop there. Unfortunately, most people do.

Below are some reasons why I think Ben has been so successful:

He started when he was 13-year-old. Some of the most successful young entrepreneurs I know today started extremely young, even younger then Ben. I've noticed that the important lessons of business can be grasped even by grade school students so that as the young entrepreneur gets older, his or her business sophistication is equal to individuals who are decades older. Furthermore, I've noticed that starting a successful business when you're young allows you to be a meaningful contributor to the adult world. Being in the adult world and the teen world at the same time really forces you to question life in a way that most other students don't feel the urge to do until their early twenties when they enter the workforce. This introspection leads to more rapid development and maturation.

Ben takes action and keeps going. Ben candidly shares many of the challenges he had while starting his business. It is clear that receiving 'luck' does not explain Ben's success. Ben was willing to learn the painful lessons of failure and create his own luck.

Ben was different and he used that to his advantage. Being a young entrepreneur leads to a lot of opportunities. It leads to press, and it often leads to business people being willing to help. Ben was really able to leverage these by understanding the power of networking and how it works, being open to feedback, and asking for help. These skills ultimately allowed him to stand on the shoulders of some of the world's most successful business people and be able to process what he saw.

To remind myself why I am here, what's important, and to be accountable.

I'm so fucking confident in myself. Not because I'm Michael Simmons, and I've been an entrepreneur for 9 years.

I'm so confident, because I'm human. Because I believe that anybody at any point in time has the potential to achieve anything regardless of their past.

In terms of business, I'm SO behind where I thought I'd be. Some of my friends who are entrepreneurs have grown more quickly. That is painful. It has hurt my confidence and made me question myself. Am I a good entrepreneur? Are we doing the right business idea? What am I doing wrong???

Then, I remember that I'm human. And, I don't say that as an excuse. I say it for inspiration.

With the world so busy, it isn't always easy selling your vision to other people. When your vision is unique, you can't just expect people to 'get it'. Otherwise, everybody else would have already done it.

With that said, when other people say "No", is the beginning, not the end. It is an opportunity to:

Understand people's point of view so you can sell your vision better next time.

Show people how much you believe in your vision, by not taking "No".

Get past people's time filters. Most people want to help, but there just isn't enough time. When you break through the noise and create slight tension, you have the opportunity to show that you and your idea are good investments.
I'm realizing that as our company grows so does the news. Everday we get good news and bad news. Lots of people saying 'yes' and lots of people saying no. This takes me on a daily roller coaster ride that can be emotionally draining at times.

As I was reading Do You! by Russell Simmons, I came across the solution: Confidence!! I've heard it said that success is going from failure to failure with confidence. That's what I think about pursuing one's vision.

The more confident I am in myself and my vision, the more the "downs" become opportunities and stepping stones toward achieving the vision. The less confidence I have, the more the "downs" become signs that the vision is about to unravel and that I'm a fraud.

How to develop and maintain confidence? Now, that's a whole other blog post.

Do you have a responsibility? To serve a purpose? Something that only you can do?

I’m not talking about the rich helping the poor, the old helping the young, or the educated helping the uneducated. I’m also not talking about something set in stone that God says you must do with your life.

I’m talking about us as human beings, realizing the blessing that life is no matter what our circumstances, and realizing that we are uniquely suited to make a contribution in this short life. Everyone has a unique background, unique strengths, and something that uniquely makes their heart sing, or their calling.

Not knowing what makes our heart sing is not an excuse for just passing through life. On the contrary, it is a call to action. It is a call to listen to life’s clues and test them like a scientist tests a hypothesis or like a child solves a puzzle.

Before you even worry about how to pay for college, you have to think about where you want to go. Here are some questions that I have received about choosing a college and major.

1.) How can I find a good college for studying business?

There are lots of colleges that offer business programs. But there are many things that factor into what the best school is for you, besides just the major. For example, the cost of tuition, how close you want to stay to home, and so forth. Try going to Peterson's College Search. Click on "Start Search" and it will guide you in finding colleges that meet the criteria that are important to you.

2.) How do you know what to major in, and whether you're making the right choice?

There is no "right" thing to major in. I started off college "undecided", and then joined the teaching program, and then changed my mind and studied Communications (TV, Film, Radio). What I learned along the way is that college is about learning how to think more than it is about what you are studying. Actually, most college graduates end up doing something entirely unrelated to what they studied. The people hiring you are also not usually very particular about what you majored in. The most important thing really is that you are studying what you are interested in right now, because then you will be more motivated and enjoy getting your degree.

As I share my story with students around the country, there is one question that always comes up. How exactly did I pay for college? So many students I have talked to are thinking of giving up their dreams of going to college because of how expensive it is. Thus, by popular demand, I am going to do a blog series on How to Pay for College.

To give you a little preview... In this series, I am going to show you how you can can pay for college even if you aren't at the top of your class, a star athlete, or particularly strong in the area of community service. I'm going to share some advice on what to do when all the scholarship applications you diligently sent out are answered with letters that begin with, "Unfortunately, you were not selected as a recepient..." and usually include something along the lines of "We had an overwhelming number of qualified applicants.", or worse - remain entirely unanswered!

In this series, I am going to take you beyond the advice you're used to hearing to the real-life, down and dirty, detailed, step-by-baby-step things that I actually did to pay through four years of $30,000+/year NYU tuition, room & board, books, food and so forth, entirely on my own. And trust me, these are things that ANYBODY can do. Stay tuned...

One of my favorite classes at NYU was Technology & Innovation. In it, the professor talked about how many of the most successful entrepreneurs aren't necesarily the people who create the technology breakthroughs. It's the people who come up with creative applications of the breakthroughs and monetize it.

To my knowledge, Sourceforge.net is the best search engine for open source projects. Is this accurate?
